We decided to excavate a block on the other side of the central S-N wall in A003. The aim was to find out if there were more tiles stuck under it.
The soil is very much like it is in the Stoa: yellowish and medium hard, but sundried. We soon hit the bedrock, this is sloping down from the N to the S, and the amount of gravel multiplied. The soil was clearly different in the N end of the trench where the foundations for the stoa had been dug. It is impossible to tell if we hit Wide and Kjellbergs trench or the original one, but I believe it is the latter as there is no evidence of post Antiquity disturbance.
Finds consisted of quite a lot of pottery, tiles and a metal nail. The latter was found under the wall with only part of the head sticking out. It could be argued that it had been hammered into the wall, but it might just as well have come from the collapse.
Part of a column was found in the center of the far S end of the trench.
