Context information

Block beneath Block 39. Soil layer consisting of reddish soil similar to that noted in other blocks in the courtyard area of building I (35, 36 & 37), but in difference to these other blocks finds were comparatively plentiful, though these were primarily deposited in the top parts of the layer. Numerous of metal pieces (possibly Iron slag) was noted in the block (for exact position see other readings), and soil samples (a total of 20 l.) were taken in this area. A small amount of charcoal was also noted in this area and a small soil sample of charcoal was collected in a plastic bag, as well as the usually recovery of charcoal material. Excavation of the entire soil layer showed that wall 82 is cut close to the edge of the block in the north, and it is therefore difficult to determine the full extent and layout of the wall before its destruction. By Wall 61a, in the eastern part of the block, we uncovered parts of rock and rubble (from here temporarily defined as Wall G), possibly part of collapse, and some of these stones are clearly consciously connected to W61a. It is therefore possible that these form part of an east-west wall either associated with the structure of Wall 82 or with the terrace wall (W62) further to the east. It is possible that this rubble was re-used as part of a foundation for W61a and the later phase (phase 2?) of building I.
