Context information

After removing blocks 4 and 5, the whole room D is excavated down to the level where the 2007 excavation halted. At this level, the room is divided into 5 new blocks (7-11), of which block 9 comprise the NW part. Begin at this level with removing block 9. As a floor level are likely to soon appear, the excavation is carefully done in a thin layer down to a level where soil seems to be harder. The soil contains plenty of finds. Among plenty of pottery and tiles are also stone tools (pestles and/or pounders?), a nearly complete miniature vessel, a bronze coin, 2 bone-needles, 3 complete or nearly complete terracotta (loom) weights of various shapes. The terracotta weights are not found in a concentration why it is doubtful that they come from a loom. Considering the context and the character of associated finds, they might rather have been used ( or re-used) as sinkers for fishing nets or as oher types of weights than those associated with textile production. There are also two metal objects which are likely to have been used as measuring weights, rather large pieces of lead (perhaps raw material for sinkers) and what loooks like iron slag. The finds are clearly cocentrated to the E part of the block. In unit H22 there is a clear concentration of glass fragments. The soil contains very much charcoal, spread all over the block but also with a massive concentration in units H22-23. A soil sample is taken from unit H23. Complete millstone tumble from wall 45? Top of large stone mortar, resting at a lower level, is visible in unit G22. (Millstone removed 29/5 when excavating lower level, block 34).
